When you think of a Farmers’ market, what comes to mind? Is it that small shop outside of town that sells local and organic products? Is it that time of the year when farmers come together on the street to sell what they have grown? When you hear about the Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market, think that but bigger.

Every Saturday of the whole year, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a collection of vendors from across the state gather around Downtown Troy to sell what they have to offer. This Farmers’ market spans 5 blocks on River St., centering around Monument Square, and then going every which way. You can start on First Street, where the Dairy vendors are held, and head north on River Street to grab a bite to eat by the Monument. You could start on Second Street where there’s an endless amount of fresh produce, and head to Lower River Street for some live music and homemade crafts.
There’s no need to panic if you can’t hit all the spots you want in just one day, because this Farmers’ market is really held all year. For the past 25 years, even in the winter months of November to April, only it’s held indoors at the Troy Atrium. Either way, rain or shine, Troy is having their weekly Farmers’ market.
Venders for this event come not just from places in the Capital Region, but all over upstate New York and beyond. Some come as far as up by Plattsburgh, such as North Country Creamery. Some come from down south, such as Maynard Farms in Poughkeepsie. Vendors even come from Connecticut, such as Aerogreen Urban Farm. Let’s not forget about the local Troy artists, who are given the opportunities to show their best work. Also worth visiting are the stores open along the streets such as River Street Beat Shop, Yellow Lab Vintage & Books, and Artcentric Marketplace.
While the weather is still nice and before the cold nips you every time you head outside, make your way to Downtown Troy for a fun Saturday activity. Maybe while you’re there you can find something new of interest, such as a band or food you once thought you’d never like. A world of opportunities is just minutes away.
