Beyond the Clock: A Review of “We Live in Time”

Many audience members at Regal Crossgates walked out of the theater crying from the new A24 romantic comedy.

In recent years, romantic comedies have not been the same as those in the past. Recently, we have gotten romantic comedies such as “Challengers” and “Anyone but You” with weird or cheesy plots and storylines. However, We Live in Time exceeded my expectations immensely and evoked the essence of romantic comedies of the past.

With a little bit of A24s’ darkness along with Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield’s beautiful connection, director of the film, John Crowely, created such a great romantic comedy. We are taken through a journey of love between both Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh). They have many ups and downs throughout their journey and relationship, making this film very relatable and real to its viewers.

Additionally, the film really captivated me because of the message beyond just the film. This film is really about the trials and tribulations of love and the limits of time. This film comments on the relationship between time and spending your time with those you love the most.

I think the director picked a great actress and actor to play Tobias and Almut. The chemistry between Pugh and Garfield seems to be so real. I also love the awkwardness and quirkiness about Garfield when it comes to Pugh. There are quite a few funny moments in the film despite it being quite sad in the end.

Overall, this movie was truly one of the best I have seen in awhile. They really do not make movies like this anymore. I highly recommend going to watch this movie, just make sure that you bring a box of tissues. By the end of it, I looked like every single other person walking out of that movie theater; eyes bloodshot and rethinking all of my life’s choices.
